Scraffito, an Italian term meaning "scratched," is a clay pottery decoration technique where a top clay layer is scratched away to reveal a contrasting colour or design beneath. Even if you're new to working with clay, you might have encountered this method, which adds intricate details to pottery.

Crafting something from clay using your hands is a truly remarkable experience. Initially, you're faced with a sticky mass – then with a bit of squeezing, rolling, or pinching – and suddenly, you've created a stunning piece of art or a practical item such as a bowl, cup, or plate.

This process is elevated by Scraffito, allowing for unique personal designs. In the workshop, participants with prior hand-building experience will first create a simple piece. Tanja will then introduce Scraffito basics, allowing practice on pre-made pots while participants' creations partially dry. Finally, each person decorates their own pot.

Post-workshop, the items dry completely before being fired and glazed, a process that can take several weeks.

This workshop is creative, 100% hands-on and potentially a bit messy – please dress accordingly :) Clay stains may not wash out of some fabrics.

This workshop will take place in our Clay Play Club, access off Community Road, opposite our milk vending shed.

Limited to 10 participants. While there is no age limitation for this workshop, participants MUST have experience in hand-building and be confident to work on their own. Bookings are essential and close Tuesday, 15th April at 2pm. Book Now
