If you've always wanted to learn the Maori art of raranga and weave flax, now is your chance! Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will create a putiputi (flower) and a kono (4-corner basket). This introductory session is perfect for beginners and offers an opportunity to explore the rich history and traditions of this ancient craft.
Your workshop tutor, Atawhai, possesses years of experience in flax weaving. She will thoroughly explain how to harvest and prepare harakeke, detailing the tikanga (protocol) surrounding its use and weaving practices. Additionally, she will demonstrate some fundamental weaving techniques to get you started. By the end of the session, you'll have the chance to complete a couple of small projects, transforming raw flax into beautiful creations.
Our workshops foster a relaxed, friendly environment where you can connect with others while learning a new skill. Although the workshop is primarily for adults, older children and teenagers who can work independently are also welcome.
Please note: the workshop will be held at Komitimiti (Riverside Café), making it a perfect blend of learning and leisure!
Limited to 8 participants (adults or young people who can work by themselves). $35 per participant. Bookings are essential and close Thursday, 10th October at 2pm. Book Now
