About the Event

Making Mozzarella from scratch with a bunch of kids is fun, exciting, tasty and very, very messy... Riverside Education's Tanja and Verena are ready for ‘Wheyham’ in the kitchen – so book one of your favourite young people and make some cheese for pizza and salad :)

Mozzarella is a southern Italian semi-soft cheese traditionally made from Italian buffalo's milk. In New Zealand, it is almost without exception, made from cows' milk, which is also what we will use during this hands-on session. After all, our bovine girls are grazing just across the road, and we have access to super fresh, healthy, raw milk.

Making your own Mozzarella for dinner is not hard, and it doesn't take very long, either. However, it does involve a little bit of technique. Luckily, Riverside’s cheese-makers Tanja and Verena have a lot of experience and look forward to passing on some tips and tricks to all the participants. The kids and adults will work in teams, and at the end, each pair will walk home with the recipe and their own ball of Mozzarella cheese to show off (and eat).

In addition to the culinary excitement, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity for quality bonding time between children and their guardians. As you work together to create Mozzarella from scratch, you will not only learn new skills but also strengthen your relationship through shared effort and collaboration. The cheese-making process requires communication, patience, and teamwork, providing a memorable experience to cherish long after the cheese is gone.

We will be working with very hot water, and making Mozzarella requires getting your hands right in, so all participants must bring a new pair of thick kitchen gloves that will fit them as well as possible.

Limited to 6 adult-child pairs. $20 per pair.  Bookings are essential and close Friday, 18th October at 2pm.

This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (at education@riverside.org.nz) for workshop questions or to ask about sponsorship options.

Please note that we will be using Riverside Milk which is RAW milk and may not be suitable for everyone's consumption. The Ministry of Primary Industries advises the following: ‘Raw milk may contain microorganisms that can causeserious illness. To reduce the risk of illness, raw milk should be heated to at least 70 degree Celsius for one minute. This is critical for infants, young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.’
