About the Event
Anyone over 16: Make your own plate from a ball of clay. With Tanja Pauls.
After running several clay workshops for children, we now have an opportunity for adults and teenagers 16 and over to get their hands into the soft, smooth material that is potters clay and get creative.
Pottery, and other ancient practices, such as mindfullness and yoga, can be therapeutic, and ceramicists have long argued the restorative benefits of creating with clay.
There is nothing that feels quite like it... The tactile experience of kneading, shaping, and decorating what is essentially a piece of our earth is grounding and calming. People of all ages are drawn to it and can spend hours shaping, finishing, and decorating. If you have ever squished a ball of clay in your hands, you understand what I mean :)
It is a physical-sensual-mental experience that doesn't require words. The physicality and limitless potential for creativity engage our muscles, fine motor skills, vision, and imagination – it is gentle and forgiving.
Tanja will help participants in this introductory workshop to gain a feel for the clay, create a simple plate and personalise it.
You can either take your artwork home as it is on the day – or you can leave it with Tanja, who will organise for your plate to be fired and glazed (included in the price).
This session is creative, 100% hands-on and potentially very messy – please dress accordingly :) Clay stains may not wash out of some fabrics.
Registration is essential. Limited to 12 participants 16 years and older.
This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja at education@riverside.org.nz to discuss sponsorship options if you are struggling to meet the workshop fee or to enquire about more info.
