About the Event

With Atawhai Teaukura

Have you always wanted to learn the Maori art of raranga and weave flax? Then, come along and dive into the practical magic of harakeke and make a putiputi (flower) and a kono (4-corner basket) whilst learning about the history and tradition of this ancient craft. This is a relatively short introductory session ideal for beginners.

Atawhai – with years of experience in flax weaving, will describe how to harvest and prepare harakeke for use, explain the tikanga (the protocol) surrounding the use of harakeke and weaving and demonstrate some basic weaving techniques. Then, all participants will get busy constructing and completing a couple of small projects. Within the small group of participants, it will be possible for you to have one-on-one support while learning to turn a plant into a product :)

While this workshop is planned for adults, older children or teenagers who can work independently would enjoy the process.

Our workshops, particularly the craft sessions, are a great way to connect to others in a relaxed atmosphere and learn a new skill together. Atawhai will provide all the tools needed, and participants will collect their own harakeke around Riverside under her guidance.

Please note: this workshop will take place at the Riverside Café!

Limited to 8 participants (adults or young people who can work by themselves). Bookings are essential and close Thursday, 10th October at 2pm.

This workshop is proudly sponsored by the Riverside Community Trust. Please contact Tanja (at education@riverside.org.nz) for workshop questions or to ask about sponsorship options.
